Renowned for using melodic expressions to communicate,the Tujia people have preserved archaic and comprehensive ballads to this day.Tima Song constitutes a distinctive sacrifice folk song exclusive to the Tujia ethnic group,epitomizing the essence of Tujia culture.Through oral transmission,Tima Song inherits various artistic forms,encompassing literature,dance,music,and religion.As a paragon of China’s minority folk literature,it was added to the second batch of the National Intangible Cultural Heritage List in 2008.Tima culture serves as an authentic reflection of the Tujia people’s folkloric life,a component of the splendid Chinese culture,and an invaluable asset of ethnic culture.General Secretary Xi Jinping once said,“The more ethnic,the more international” and "In he protection of intangible cultural heritage,we ought to accord particular emphasis to the preservation and inheritance of the cultural legacy of ethnic minorities." Amid the nation’s current advocacy for augmenting cultural soft power,it is incumbent upon us to reinforce our cultural self-assurance and usher China’s exceptional ethnic culture onto a more expansive stage.Consequently,the translation of ethnic classics emerges as an indispensable trajectory.This thesis takes the English version of Tima Song as the research object,delving into the representation of the Three-Beauty Principle within its English transitional language.Xu Yuanchong put forth the Three-Beauty Principle theory,encompassing the translation of poetry from sense,sound and form beauty.He posited,Three-Beauty Principle constitutes the ontological foundation of poetry translation,yet it can also be employed in the translation of prose and fiction." The form of singing ballads in Tima Song shares notable resemblances with poetry.Consequently,it becomes apparent that this sophisticated translation theory is not applicable to poetry but also fitting for the translation of folk ballads such as Tima Song.Presently,there is a paucity of research concerning the application of the Three-Beauty Principle in the translation of ethnic literature.This thesis interprets the aesthetic representation within the English translation of Tima Song from the perspective of Xu Yuanchong’s Three-Beauty Principle.By conducting a comparative analysis of the sense,sound,and form between the Chinese and English translations of Tima Song,the thesis explores whether the Three-Beauty Principle holds practical value for the translation endeavors of Tima Song.Furthermore,it explores whether the English version reproduces the unique style of Tima Song while conveying the cultural information of the Tujia people.The first chapter of the thesis delves into the representation of "beauty of sense" within the English version of Tima Song.The translator uncovers the "beauty of sense" in the lyrics by exploring Tujia culture,discarding specific antiquated notions,and employing creative rebellion.Utilizing translation methods such as transliteration,literal translation,annotation,and expansion,the translator translates ethnic cultural information.The second chapter investigates the representation of "beauty of sound" in the English translation of Tima Song.As a form of oral literature,Tima Song is rhythmic and is melodious to read.The translator adopts domestication,amalgamating the characteristics of English-speaking countries’ folk songs to achieve the "beauty of rhyme".By employing repetition,semantically equivalent expressions,and other translation methods,the English version emanates a sense of rhythm.Furthermore,the translator vividly recreates the singing scene through the transliteration of onomatopoeic words and lining words,thus realizing the "beauty of sound." The third chapter explores the manifestation of "beauty of form" within the English translation of Tima Song.The sentence structures and diverse repetitions enable readers to appreciate the formal elegance of the Tima lyrics.The translator’s adept handling of rhetorical devices,such as metaphor,personification,and hyperbole within the lyrics,facilitates the reproduction of the "beauty of form".In conclusion,the distinctive religious culture of Tima Song has been effectively communicated in its English translation,the unique linguistic culture of Tima Song has been exemplified in the English version,and the characteristic performance style of Tima Song has been perpetuated in the translated work.Whether considering the beauty of sense,beauty of sound,or beauty of form,the English translation of Tima Song successfully conveys the beauty of the Tujia ethnic culture.Under the guidance of the Three-Beauty Principle,it is anticipated that more translators will present the unique beauty of ethnic cultural classics to the translation and spread the beauty of Chinese culture to the world. |
