A Report On C-E Translation Of The Weeping Songs In The Marriage Of The Tujia People In China:Music And Context(Excerpts)

This report is based on the C-E translation of The Weeping Songs in the Marriage of the Tujia People in China: Music and Context(Excerpts),which was written by Yu Yongyu for the degree of Ph.D in1999 and published in 2002 by China Minzu University Press.The book consists of eight chapters,mainly introducing the general situation of Tujia ethnic group,the weeping songs in the marriage,the weeping ceremonies in the marriage and the Tujia women,etc.This translation practice takes the fourth chapter and the first section of the seventh chapter of the book as the source text,which chiefly introduces the relationship between the weeping ceremonies and the weeping songs in the marriage,as well as the factors of Tujia women’s weeping in the marriage.The Weeping Songs in the Marriage of the Tujia People in China: Music and Context(Excerpts)is rich in contents,introducing the weeping culture of the Tujia people by citing some weeping songs in the marriage with clear logic.Moreover,the sentences in the source text are complicated and the cited weeping songs in the marriage are characteristic.Based on the analysis of the source text,the translator adopts Skopos theory to guide this translation practice,so that the translation can maintain the accuracy and artistry of the source text,and the translation can be coherent and readable.This requires the translator not only to have a clear understanding of the weeping culture of Tujia ethnic group,but also to skillfully master the expression habits of the target language.Firstly,under the guidance of Skopos theory,the translator mainly adopts the translation methods of literal translation,free translation,transliteration and recreation to translate the modal particles and local dialects in cited weeping songs and the names of the weeping ceremonies in the marriage.Secondly,the translator employs the translation techniques of addition,division and shift to translate the non-subject sentences and running sentences in the source text.Third,the translator combines domestication and foreignization to translate the words of the weeping songs and achieve the cohesion and coherence of the source text as well.In short,this report has discussed the feature of the source text and relevant translation strategies from the three aspects of word,sentence and discourse under the guidance of Skopos theory,so it is expected that more people can pay attention to the translation of the Tujia weeping culture in the marriage and this report can provide a few ideas for the translation of the weeping songs in the marriage of the Tujia people.
