A Report On The E-C Translation Of The Natural Resources Of Australia (Chapter 15)

This thesis is a translation report based on the translation practice of The Natural Resources of Australia(Chapter 15).The book is a work on the natural resource economics,which gives a comprehensive description of the prospects and problems for the development of Australia’s natural resources.Chapter 15 of the book focuses on the foreign investment in Australia’s natural resources,including foreign ownership and control of its major natural resources,the impact of such foreign investment on Australian economy and the corresponding economic policies adopted by Australian governments.As an economic text,the source text features accuracy,rigorousness and logicality in language expression and is quite informative,with subordinate clauses frequently used.Due to the differences between Chinese and English and the complex structure of certain subordinate clauses,the translation of these clauses poses a major challenge for the translator,especially the translation of attributive clauses,adverbial clauses and appositive clauses.According to Reiss’ s text typology theory,the source text is an informative text,and its translation should fully and accurately reproduce the original content,being oriented towards the target language and ensuring the clarity of language expression.Therefore,based on the text typology theory,the main principles of informative text translation are summarized,namely,the principles of accuracy,explicitness,and readability.Then by following these principles,the corresponding translation methods for the major difficulties are proposed.The methods of pre-positioning,post-positioning and blending are adopted for the the translation of attributive clauses;linear translation,inversion and conversion are used in the translation of adverbial clauses;combination and division are employed for the the translation of appositive clauses.It is hoped that this translation task will provide some references for the translation of subordinate clauses in economic texts and enrich the translation practice on the development of Australian natural resources.
