| This report is written based on the interpreter’s mock interpreting practice. The interpreter chooses Emerging Environmental Health Challenges Seminar Series by Wendy Purcell as the material and records the interpreting process. The seminar consists of two parts, which are the speech about the emerging environmental health challenges for universities and the solution and Q&A for attendants on Wendy Purcell’s speech. This report focuses on interpreting long sentences encountered by the interpreter in the interpreting process and the influence of Gile’s Effort Model on this interpreting, and explains the difficulties in interpreting long sentences in the process and the coping strategies. The main purpose of this report is to analyze the important guiding role of Gile’s Effort Model in interpreting long sentences, and to propose specific strategies to face the difficulties in interpreting long sentences. He looks up previous studies and classifies such difficulties in these sentences of the task into three categories,i.e.multiple coordinate components, multiple redundant words and multiple modifiers. With the guidance of Gile’s Effort Model, the interpreter adopts three strategies to cope with the aforementioned three categories of long sentences respectively, including syntactic linearity, omission and syntactic restructuring. The three coping strategies improve the quality of the interpreter’s performance to some degree. In the end,the interpreter concludes that when dealing with long sentences,an interpreter should be able to adopt different coping strategies flexibly, under the guidance of Gile’s Effort Model,to convey the connotation as clearly and as simply as possible,in the hope of providing inspiration or references for future study. |
