| Robert Alexander Schumann(1810-1856)was a great German composer and an important music critic during the Romantic period. He composed three piano sonatas in his life, among them the Piano Sonata No.3 in f minor,Op.14 is the last and the largest one. This work has appeared in versions of three, four or even five movements at different times.Although the contrasts between movements are strong,Schumann ingeniously used a single subject motive to construct this entire multi-movement work. The music not only reflects the fantastic characteristics of Schumann’s piano music, but also possesses a tragic musical color. It is a relatively difficult but brilliant large-scale work. This thesis is composed of three parts: introduction, principal content, and conclusion. The principal content is divided into three chapters. The first chapter has two sections. The first summarizes Schumann’s life and creative career;the second introduces the creative background of his Piano Sonata No.3 in f minor and the evolution of its versions. The second chapter mainly explores the creative features of this work from multiple aspects, and is divided into four sections: formal analysis, tonal layout, melodic features, and rhythmic features. Finally, the musical characteristics of this piano work are summarized. The third chapter expands on the choice of performance techniques for this work, which is divided into five aspects: tempo selection, dynamic gauging, control of the touch, pedal usage, and fingering design. The author hopes to have a deeper understanding of the musical vocabulary of this work through a multi-faceted and multi-angled theoretical research, and at the same time combine theory and practice,to analyze and overcome the technical difficulties of this work in a targeted manner,in order to provide helpful assistance to others performing this piece. |
