Johannes Brahms(1833-1897)was one of the greatest composers in German.His music is firmly rooted in the structures and compositional techniques of the Classical masters even he lived in the Romantic period.Thus,people saw him as the champion of "pure music",as opposed to the program music.Brahms’ s works include symphony,chamber music,concerto,variation and so on.His piano variations show diverse variation skills and rigorous contraposition technique.These piano variations have great influence on his other kinds of music,as well as on the other composers inthat period.Brahms composed seven piano variations in his total life,five of which are for solo piano.Brahms’ s Op.9,the Variations on a Theme of Schumann,will be analyzed in this article to find out the music features and playing skills.There are two chapters in this paper.The first chapter gives an introduction of Brahms and his piano variations.In the second chapter the author will give a detailed analysis on the background,music features and playing skills of the Variations on a Theme of Schumann. |
