An E-C Translation Report On Original Operating Manual For Control Cabinet Electrical Power Supply For Assembly Line

At present,import trade is still an important part of trade development in China.The operating manual is an attached document in English together with the imported machine in most cases.Thus,the localization of original manual is necessary to guide the professionals on operating the machine under the safety requirements.Meanwhile,the exploration of translation strategies of the manual will also promote trade development.This translation report is based on the translation practice of the Original Operating Manual for Control Cabinet Electrical Power Supply for Assembly Line.According to Newmark’s text typology,the operating manual is an informative text.The difficulties in the translation are mainly posed by nominalization,terminologies,and common words with technical meaning at the lexical level;and imperative sentences,passive voice sentences,and long and complex sentences at the syntactic level.The translation practice is under Newmark’s semantic translation and communicative translation.It is mainly guided by communicative translation and supplemented by semantic translation,which focuses on the response of the readership and the readability.At the lexical level,conversion,free translation,and affirmation and negation are applied to nominalization for the readers to understand the original content more easily under the guidance of communicative translation.Besides,terminology counterparts and equivalents to common words with technical meaning are used for the accuracy through literal translation under the guidance of semantic translation.At the syntactic level,literal translation with modifier reversion is applied to some imperative sentences,and some long and complex sentences under communicative translation.Moreover,conversion and division are used in passive voice sentences,and in some long and complex sentences respectively under communicative translation.Semantic translation has also been adopted at the syntactic level.Simple imperative sentences are translated through literal translation to retain the same imperative mood,improving the effectiveness and accuracy of translation.In translation practice,semantic translation and communicative translation should be regarded as a whole.The translation of informative texts focuses on communicative translation,but it still needs to be combined with semantic translation to balance the readability of the translation and the effectiveness of the translation.Meanwhile,as an exploration of the application of semantic translation and communicative translation to practice,the translation methods and strategies illustrated in this translation report are expected to be referred to for the translation of the informative texts.
