With China’s rapid development and frequent contact with the outside world in science and technology, more and more products are going out from China to the international market. Thus, translation of product user manuals is in great demand. Along with that trend, study on user manual translation has attracted increasing attention. This report is based on the author’s translation of WDGL-VI/A Digital Fault Recorder User Manual. That manual aims to teach users to use a kind of fault recorder software which is applied in electric power systems. The author completed the translation task based on serious and careful analysis of the source text. According to analysis, the source text is an informative text, so the author decided to take the theory of communicative translation proposed by Newmark as the major theory guiding her translation. To apply the theory of communicative translation when translating informative texts, translators should follow three principles. The three principles are preciseness principle, reader-oriented principle and conciseness principle. During the process of translation, the author adopted several approaches to follow those three principles. The author wanted to summarize and analyze the approaches to help not only the author herself but also other translators with their future translation of user manuals. This report consists of four chapters. The first chapter is mainly about the background of the translation task, the significance of this report and the structure of the report. The second chapter expounds the theory of communicative translation and the three principles of it. The third chapter represents how the principles are observed in translation with relevant examples. The fourth chapter is a conclusion of this report.
