| The nominative absolute construction,also known as the absolute construction,is a popular grammatical phenomenon appearing in various and different forms,which can often be seen in literary works for it can enliven them.The source text,The Boat that Brings You Home,on which this report is based,is rich in sentences involving this kind of phenomenon.Chinese grammar excludes the nominative absolute construction.Therefore,when it is translated from English to Chinese,some non-equivalence will be brought about,which gets so many translators in trouble determining whether to satisfy the equivalence of form,or that of content or both.And Eugene A.Nida proposed in his theory of functional equivalence that translation should mainly focus more on the exchange of information than the equivalence of form.It is obvious that this theory can greatly guide the Englishto-Chinese translation of the nominative absolute construction.On the basis of the translation of The Boat that Brings You Home and under the guidance of Eugene A.Nida’s functional equivalence,this report will talk about translation strategies of the nominative absolute construction,which consists of an introduction to the translation task,the translation process,case analysis and the final conclusion.Among the four parts in this report,the third one is the main body,in which forms and functions of the absolute construction are introduced,some cases analyzed and whether the translation strategies including amplification,omission,division and conversion are available is tested.It is expected that this report can offer some experience of the translation of the nominative absolute construction. |
