In recent years, the research on Chinese novel translation has increased with each passing day. With the Chinese culture “going out,” more people participate in the practice of novel translation.Chi Zijian is one of the most influential female writers in contemporary China. This thesis chooses one of Chi Zijian’s short stories titled“Bathe in Clean Water” as its translation material to conduct an English translation and discusses the translation strategies. The short story describes the three generations of a family in a small town taking a bath before Chinese New Year and depicts the ordinary but profound life of the simple rural people.Nida’s functional equivalence theory emphasizes on reader’s response. It requires the translator to focus on transmitting the meaning of the original text rather than adhering to the word form so that the target readers can attain a similar reading experience as the original text readers to the greatest extent. It can better convey the content and ideas of the original work by utilizing the theory of functional equivalence as a guide, demonstrating ample consideration for the reading feelings of the target readers, and finally achieving the effects of functional equivalence. Therefore, through the analysis of the language features of “Bathe in Clean Water,” this thesis is to explore the translation strategies employed by literary work from three levels of lexicon, syntax, and text, with the support from the functional equivalence theory. At the lexical level, the methods of literal translation plus annotation, free translation, extension of word meaning, and part of speech conversion are applied to provide the target readers with assistance in better comprehension and understanding of the original text.At the syntactic level, the translation can be accepted by English readers through the analysis on the sentence structure of the original text, using the translation strategies including the combination of short sentences, inversion, and transformation of active and passive forms.Following the differences in the expression between English and Chinese at the textual level, the lack of logical coherence can be resolved through the coordination of the context. In addition,by attaching importance to the habit of focusing on the subject in EnglishA Study on C-E Translation Strategies of Chi Zijian’s Works from the Perspective of Functional Equivalence Theory:Taking “Bathe in Clean Water” as an Example and re-establishment of the emotional equivalence, the reading and understanding of the target readers can be facilitated. After the translation practice, the conclusions can be achieved: translation of novels should transmit the ideas and style of the work based on breaking through the surface structure of the original text so that it can better spread the Chinese culture. The translation practice aims to reference and reflect the English translators of Chi Zijian’s novels. At the same time,it will promote cross-cultural exchanges and push forward the wide dissemination of Chinese culture worldwide.
