With the increasingly extensive and far-reaching sino-foreign academic exchanges, the translation of academic texts is drawing more and more attention from scholars. As a linguistic phenomenon, metaphor is also a thinking model in essence. With further deepening of cognitive research on metaphor, scholars at home and abroad have turned their focus from the monomodal metaphor to the multimodal metaphor. The book Multimodal Metaphor, compiled by Charles Forceville and Eduardo Urios-Aparisi,contains the latest research results on multimodal metaphors from abroad, but there is no translation published in China before. Therefore, the translator decided to translate it to own a modest contribution to the development of multimodal metaphor theory in China. This paper is a practical report based on the translation of the book Multimodal Metaphor.Academic texts are usually logical in language, cover a large amount of information, and are also characterized by dense terminology and complex sentence structure, all of which bring challenges to the translators’ work.Accordingly, translators must master the professional background knowledge, strive to accurately understand the original text, carefully study its linguistic characteristics, and take into account the differences in the logical expressions of the Chinese and English languages to achieve accuracy and readability of the translation. The theory of text type translation proposed by Katharina Reiss has not only broken the requirement of lexical and syntactic equivalence but also devoted to textual equivalence, and its influence has become increasingly prominent.According to this theory, the book Multimodal Metaphor is mainly an informative text, aiming at the accurate transmission of information. Therefore, the adoption of the established translation and literal translation, the conversion of the word class, and the semantic selection and derivation are adopted at the lexical level, the long and difficult sentences are translated through the division and transformation method at the syntactic level, while the adding method and repetition method are used to achieve the cohesion at the textual level,so that the translation can achieve equivalence in meaning with the source text, and correspond with the expressions of the target language at the same time.Guided by the text typology theory, this translation report chooses effective translation strategies and techniques for English academic texts by analyzing the source text type and linguistic characteristics and combining them with specific cases,to provide a reference for comparable issues that may arise in the translation of academic texts in the future, motivating more translators to introduce the latest academic ideas into China and promoting Chinese academics to go abroad.
