This report is guided by translation variation theory. The translation material is excerpted from Chapter 3 of the Death of Humanity,a social science book published by American historian Richard Weikart in 2014.With a large amount of professional knowledge of anthropology, sociology and history, this book contains many professional vocabularies and is not easy to be understood.Due to this, the report has summarized the most prominent features of the social science texts, such as too many professional words, long sentences, strict logic, difficult to understand, and has adopted the corresponding translation strategies. The translation variation theory, raised by Huang Zhonglian, consists of seven variation devices, including addition, deletion, editing, narration, condensation, combination and adaption. This report analyzed the applications of these variation devices in this translation material. The translator compared the original translation version with the polished version, explored the reason why the translator chose the corresponding variation device, and analyzed the highlight of the polished one.Through this translation practice, the translator has drawn the following conclusion: the translation variation theory is effective in guiding the translation of social science texts, especially when it comes to meeting the different needs of the readers at different levels.Through translating social science texts under the guidance of translation variation theory, the knowledge and information in the original texts can be transmitted more effectively.Figure 0;Table 0;Reference 21...
