Study On Translation Of Long And Complex Sentences Based On The Translation Variation Theory

Nowadays,information is an important strategic resource for social development,and the transfer of information is the key point in using the resource.Popular science texts mainly aim at information transmission,so translators should ensure the efficiency of information transmission when translating this text type.Otherwise,it's difficult to achieve the goal that information transmission synchronizes with the development of science and technology.Long and complex sentences,which appear frequently in popular science texts,are also one of the main characteristics of the text in this practice.How to deal with the long and complex sentences,having long been the point that translator pays attention to,is also a problem often being discussed in the translation of popular science text.Translation variation is a phenomenon of non-complete translation compared with complete translation.In the beginning of the 21 st century,Professor Huang Zhonglian put forward the Translation Variation Theory and seven appropriate adaptations based on his study on Yan Fu's theory of "faithfulness,expressiveness,and elegance".This paper,taking the translation of the chapter 6 of Delivering the Digital Economy as an example,attempts to study the translation strategies of long and complex sentences in popular science texts under the guidance of Translation Variation Theory with adaptations as its essence.The author,through example comparison and analysis,tries to study the application effects of using the adaptations of addition,omission,edition and revision which have been typically used in the translation practice.The four adaptations all have their own applying rules and application scopes,but all of which have one thing in common: aiming to realize efficient information delivery.In order to present the original information at the most extent,more than one various adaptation is used simultaneously in the translation of many long and complex sentences.In a word,the flexible use of various adaptations will help to deliver the original information in an effective and accurate way in translating popular science texts whichhave strong practicality.It not only can highlight the use value of original text,but also will be of great significance for optimizing translation quality,saving translation costs as well as boosting reading efficiency of target-language readers.
