A Report On The E-C Translation Of Popular Military Texts Under The Guidance Of Newmark’s Text Typology

The U.S.war industry has been in a leading position in the world for a long period of time.The translation of materials related to the U.S.war industry can deepen our understanding of such an industry in the U.S.,and help us make a reasonable analysis of the impacts of U.S.military strategies on the international military situation at present and in the future.This translation report is based on the author’s translation of the first chapter of Understanding the War Industry by the American expert Christian Sorenson on U.S.military-industrial complex.After going through such procedures as collecting parallel texts,glossary making,translating and proofreading,the author of this report produces an adequate target text.As a popular book on military industry,the book features a great number of technical terms and long and complex sentences.The author also expresses his hatred for the war and his criticism for the role the U.S.military-industrial complex in promoting the military conflicts around the world.These emotional expressions pose another type of obstacles the translator encounters in the translation process.Thus,guided by Newmark’s Text Typology Theory,this report discusses how to cope with some of the translation problems.At the lexical level,translation techniques such as conversion of parts of speech,omission and semantic extension are adopted.At the syntactic level,translation technqiues such as readjustment of word order,unpacking,division,combination and restructuring are adopted.While at the textual level,the cohesive devices are recognized to correctly reproduce the semantic relations in the original work.Moreover,the author’s intentions and tones are accurately interpreted and conveyed.It is hoped that this translation report will provide some reference for the translation of popular military texts in the future.
