| The translation report is extracted from the first and fifth chapters of the English popular science book,Rest,Play,Grow: Making Sense of Preschoolers.Drawn from a series of preschool courses created by an illustrious international developmental psychologist,Gorden Neufeld,the book aims to reveal a natural parenting approach.It strives for motivating parents or other caretakers to regain parental authority in deference to physical and mental development patterns of children instead of excessive dependence on others’ experience and techniques.This paper is to represent the features of scientificity,literariness,popularity and interestingness of popular science texts guided by Newmark’s Text Typology.Having pursued the source text,the author concluded that its foremost goal tends to cause readers’ attention and to activate actions;on the other hand,it conveys the related professional knowledge and expresses the text-writer’s views and feelings.It whereby centers on both audience and messages.In translation,semantic and communicative strategies are applied in conformity with different text styles.In the light of the available studies,the paper points out that the role of literariness should deserves attention as well.The growing diverse transmission of popular science texts contributes to greater emphasis on the aesthetic and vocative function when its message is delivered.This paper exhibits more non-scientific elements including the translation of utterances by famed figures,poets,non-verse passages aside from rhetorical devices.The purpose of the practice is to show the difficulties and complexity of such texts,and provide thoughts for popular science translation. |
