In October 2021,Rand Corporation released a series of four selected reports and Rand Security Cooperation Selection 2006--2019 is one of them.“Security Cooperation” refers to various activities carried out by the United States to strengthen its military partnership with other nations and reflects the development trends and key themes of the national and military strategies of the United States. The original version is a scientific and technological text and contains a large number of non-finite verbs.A non-finite verb can act as any element of a sentence, except that it cannot serve as a predicate independently. The diverse use of non-finite verbs in the sentence makes it more difficult to translate. In order to deal with the translation of non-finite verbs more accurately, the translator uses three translation methods of“adaptation addition and compilation” to improve the quality of the translation text with the help of the translation variation theory. In the process of translation,The “adaptation”translation method refers to the change of part of speech or voice so that the translation can be more concise, logical and be in line with the thinking mode and expression habits of the target language.the “addition” translation method is used to supplement the explanation by adding prepositions and conjunctions, which reflects the logic implied in the original text and makes the translation smoother. The “compilation” translation method is used to adjust the sentence structure by splitting and recombining the word order,so as to make the translation logic and clear and conform to the reading habits of the target readers.Translation variation theory has effectively guided the translation practice in improving the quality of translation and making the target text meet the translation requirements of scientific and technological texts,as well as the reading demands of target readers. The application of variation theory to solving the problems in translating non-finite verbs in this practice can provide some reference for the translation practice of the same kind in the future and contribute to promoting the construction and development of Chinese native translation theory.
