| China is a multi-ethnic country,of which every ethnic group has its own distinctive culture.This ethnical culture plays an important role in inheriting Chinese civilization.However,it has not been brought to the forefront in the translation circle.This report takes Chapter Six of Hunan Yao Ethnic Minority as the source text,which introduces customs of the Yao people,including architectures,costumes,diets,wedding ceremonies,festivals and so on.A lot of culture-loaded words are included in the chapter,which are the most important and the most difficult part of the text.Therefore,proper translation of culture-loaded words is of great importance to the success of the cultural communication.Classification of culture-loaded words is made according to Nida,Eugene A’s classification to culture.Verschueren’s Adaption Theory is adopted as the theoretical guidance.Translation of folklore,as an activity of trans-lingual cultural exchange,is a continuous process in which the translator needs to adapt language and cultural mechanism.Translation of culture-loaded words in Chapter Six of Hunan Yao Ethnic Minority is conducted mainly from contextual correlates of adaptation and structural objects of adaptation.By means of translation practice and study,the translator finds that time of target readers should be adapted when translate festivals,dynasties,major events,solar terms,all of which belong to social culture-loaded words;space of readers should be adapted when translating direction and locations,which belong to ecological words;translation of material culture-loaded words and customs and kinship terms should be adapted to target readers’ social world;while translating ecological culture-loaded words and color,one kind of social culture-loaded words,the translator should adapt to the mental world of target readers;translation of linguistic culture-loaded words should adapt to structure of target language. |
