The early stage of Chinese drama began with the performance of students from Shanghai Church School.After the performance activities of Chunliu Society,Chunyang Society,and Evolutionary Group,the professional performance of the new drama flourished and declined,and finally ended with the creation of the new drama from Nankai School.It can be said that since the beginning of the 20th century,the creators of Nankai New Drama have promoted the modernization process of Chinese drama from aspects such as drama concepts,script creation,and theoretical construction,in response to the practical needs of promoting social change,adapting to the changing historical environment of the times,and adhering to the artistic pursuit of aesthetics.Against the backdrop of the transformation of Chinese drama from classical form to modern form,a comprehensive review of the creation and activities of Nankai New Drama has certain literary and dramatic significance for further exploring the research field of early Chinese drama and deeply understanding the development and evolution of Chinese drama.In addition to the introduction and conclusion,the thesis is divided into four chapters.The introduction includes the background of the topic selection,the definition of relevant concepts,and a review of the current research situation of Nankai new drama creation,clarifying the problems to be solved and the reasons.The first chapter clarifies the cultural context of Nankai new drama creation.Early Chinese drama has been shouldering the historical mission of salvation and enlightenment since its birth.Both the improvement of late Qing drama and the practice of early Chinese drama have promoted the transformation of Chinese drama from a classical form to a modern form.Among them,the social and cultural field provided by the modern education system provides a social space for the survival of the new drama art and a cultural environment for cultivating independent character,which is a necessary prerequisite for the occurrence of Nankai new drama creation.The second chapter analyzes the form exploration of Nankai new drama creation.The creators of Nankai New Drama maintain a relatively dialectical and objective view of traditional opera from a comparative perspective between traditional opera and Western drama,critically inheriting the spirit and structural style of traditional aesthetics.At the same time,it began to depict the structure of Western drama,which enabled the new drama of Nankai to possess the quality of modern drama,and opened up a comprehensive transcendence of the new drama of the same period of civilization.The third chapter discusses the theme of Nankai new drama creation.The creation of Nankai New Drama shows obvious transitional characteristics,among which Zhang Boling and Zhang Pengchun are the main advocates of Nankai New Drama creation.The former’s relatively conservative theatrical concepts have some discord with the latter,causing Zhang Pengchun to actively adjust the creative orientation of Nankai New Drama,promoting the integration of social function and artistic pursuit of dual values in the new drama,and starting a deeper integration of Chinese and Western drama aesthetics in Nankai New Drama.The fourth chapter discusses the gains and losses of Nankai new drama creation.Nankai New Drama attaches great importance to script creation and theoretical construction of drama,creating "New Village Head",a dramatic literary work with the basic characteristics of modern drama,which gives a loud precursor to the awakening of modern drama consciousness.However,influenced by the development rules of drama art and the continuous dispersion of key characters,Nankai teachers and students objectively lost the motivation for new drama creation,unable to curb the overall decline of Nankai new drama creation.The conclusion part briefly summarizes the gains and losses of Nankai new drama creation and the main points of the thesis.On the one hand,it affirms the achievements of Nankai new drama creation in the process of promoting the modernization and transformation of Chinese drama,and on the other hand,it evaluates and analyzes the drawbacks of its eventual loss of new drama creation momentum and lack of continuity and stability.
