The study object of this thesis is May Fourth drama.The thesis attempts,from the perspective of "Breaking" and "Establishment",to systemically study the generation and development issues of May Fourth drama.Trying to clarify the historical contribution of May Fourth drama about drama idea,theoretical development,script writing,artistic exploration,and the historical dilemma.In addition to the introduction and conclusion,the thesis consists of six parts.Chapter 1 is about "Breaking",this part discusses the basic premise of May Fourth drama's establishment,that is,breaking the old forces of the drama field,opening the necessary space and seeking the legitimacy of history for the May Fourth drama by criticizing the old play and the civilization drama.In the section of criticism of the old play,the thesis takes the time as the clue to discuss the specific critical content of "New youth group" to the old play from the stage form to the ideological content,meanwhile,reviewing the misplaced debate between Zhang Houzai and "New youth group" by reason of different perspectives,this debate deepens the direction and strength of the old drama criticism,and reveals some essential features of Chinese opera.In the section of criticism of the civilization drama,the public drama club's members focus on the standard of drama to correct and reverse the pursuit of the interests and the decadent taste of the civilization drama via serious and correct concept of modern drama.Their critical perspective is mainly implemented in the old play spirit,commercialization and content taste of the civilization drama.Chapter 2 mainly discusses the "Establishment" of May Fourth drama,this mainly involves two problems,in the first place,the establishment of modern concept of drama on the epistemological level which takes "Ibsenism" as a sign,and the exploration of the realistic creation theory in the methodological level;in the next place,the emergence of the dramatic text with the connotation of Modern Enlightenment,the thesis is composed of two plays in the process of modernization of Chinese drama literature,that is,Nankai's The New Village Head and Hu Shi's The Marrige,the thesis clarifies the historical position and significance of The Marrige as the first modern drama in China.Chapter 3 is a historical investigation on the theory of May Fourth drama.The theory of May Fourth drama,on the whole,it has experienced a process from the introduction of foreign countries to the formation of an independent self.Section 1 is about the introduction of western drama theory,it includes the introduction and translation of all kinds of drama thoughts and theories in addition to realism,for example,Song Chunfang's introduction to the western romanticism and expressionism;Tian Han's thoughts on the neo romanticism;Bing Xin,Hong Shen and Xiong Foxi's introduction and research on the basic theories of tragedy and comedy in western drama literature;Song Chunfang's appeal to the theory of modern western theatre.Section 2 mainly analyzes the generation of independent modern drama theory which takes Chen Dabei's Amatour Drama as a sign,and the The construction of modern drama art and critical theory which takes Xiong Foxi and Xiang Peiliang's research as a sign.Chapter 4 is mainly about the examination and investigation of the creation of May Fourth drama.First,in the May Fourth period,the beginning of Chinese modern drama literature is to a large extent dependent on the reference of western modern drama literature and even imitation,through the study of the modern western excellent drama literature,May Fourth dramatists gradually achieve self creation of modern dramas.In this process,there are a number of historical and realistic background of the new era with the special color of the model dramas and adaptations.Secondly,the May Fourth social problem drama is widely spread and accepted in the field of drama literature in the direct embodiment of Ibsenism,on the pursuit of art and aesthetics,it holds the spirit of realism,especially emphasized in literature in the May Fourth period;from the perspective of value concept and theme selection,It followed a series of values in modern society advocated in the May Fourth period,it is an important part of the literature for life.Chapter 5 is about the performance and change of May Fourth drama aesthetics,that is,the exploration of drama art.This is mainly reflected in three aspects:first,the establishment of modern stage characters,this includes the change of the stage character image system,the application of realistic description method and the modeling of typical characters;second,the internalization of dramatic conflict,the thesis reveals the shift of attention in the May Fourth drama through the change of conflict mode of two A Pair of Peacocks Southeast Fly;third,the simple and poetic features of drama language,in the May fourth earlier period,drama needs to take on the important task of Chinese social reality,so what is needed is the objective,direct and realistic drama language which is rich in the living condition of the drama;with the May Fourth tide of literature after the situation for dramatic aesthetic adjustment provides the necessary "soil",for example,the change of playwright group mentality,angle adjustment,the rise of literary trend and the launching of dramatic movement,these are more or less contributed to the dramatic change of the dramatic language style in the drama creation.Chapter 6 mainly discusses the historical dilemma of the modernization of May Fourth drama.The first dilemma is the politicization of May Fourth drama,although the politicization injected the fundamental impetus to the modernization of May Fourth drama,but to a certain extent,distorted and overwhelmed the modern connotation of May Fourth drama,and decided the aesthetic cognition and exploration of May Fourth drama art.The second dilemma is May Fourth drama practice of minority reality,the reason is that the modernity connotation and artistic expression of May Fourth drama and the dislocation between the aesthetic perception and the mental state of the masses,May Fourth dramatists' misunderstanding and practical limitations of the popularization of drama,and May Fourth drama performance motivation and attitude problems.The third dilemma is the contradiction between the modernization and nationalization of May Fourth drama,this is manifested in the modern construction of May Fourth drama overwhelming and obscured the pursuit of nationalization,it also has negative impact on the national theatre movement group's exploration about the nationalization of drama for the modernization of May Fourth drama.
