A Practice Report On The C-E Translation Of Maoming Port And The Maritime Silk Road (Excerpts)

The paper is a practice report on the translation from Chinese to English based on Maoming Port and the Maritime Silk Road,which covers the historical process,characteristics,and patterns of the occurrence,development,prosperity,and decline of Maoming Port in Maoming City,Guangdong Province,since the founding of New China and in the context of the Belt and Road Initiative,as well as the impact of the relevant sea and land resources on the city.Since the implementation of the Belt and Road Initiative in 2013,China’s coastal cities have opened up international corridors and are increasingly interacting with other countries around the world.As an important node on the Maritime Silk Road,Maoming must seize the opportunity to build a new pattern of openness and establish a good image.To promote the development of Maoming and to facilitate the local culture to go out,there is a need to produce overseas-targeted publicity translations to achieve communication.Maoming Port and the Maritime Silk Road is part of the Guangdong Province Socio-Economic and Cultural Series,a category of local publicity texts with regional characteristics related to economic and trade promotion.The text covers a wide range of fields,including characteristics,history and culture of Maoming,and the development of the port,in which distinctive vocabulary,such as proper nouns and cultural-loaded words,the sentence patterns,such as long sentences and non-subject sentences,and the discourse,like the cohesion of sentences and the shift of perspective,are the difficulties of translation in this paper.Therefore,guided by Huang Youyi’s “Three Closeness”principle,the author mainly adopted translation methods and techniques,such as translation and interpretation,amplification,conversion,adding subject and using “there be” sentence,cohesion and perspective shift at the lexical,syntactic,and textual levels respectively.The translation of Maoming Port and the Maritime Silk Road will help target readers better understand Maoming and Maoming Port,which will be beneficial to the sustainable development of Maoming City;at the same time,the author aims to improve her translation skills and contribute to the international publicity of her hometown through this practice translation.
