C-E Translation Report On China In Festivals(Excerpts) Guided By Communicative Translation

China in Festivals is one of the books in the popularization of traditional Chinese culture series Nine Dimensions of China,written by Chinese folklorist Zhong Fulan,mainly introduces the origin,customs,related legends and allusions of traditional Chinese festivals,which have formed unique cultural connotation,reflecting strong cultural cohesion and vitality,and are one of the essence of Chinese civilization.Based on the translation practice of Chapters 8,9 and 10 of China in Festivals on Winter Solstice Festival,Laba Festival and Flower Festival,the report analyzes the difficulties encountered in the translation process and discusses the solutions guided by the communicative translation theory proposed by Newmark.China in Festivals is a cultural text,the translator should consider how to disseminate traditional culture without compromising the transmission of information from the source text in translating.The communicative translation theory focuses on the expression and communicative effects of the translation and on the reading experience of the readers.Better effect of information transmission can be achieved by adopting it to guide the translation of the contents containing Chinese cultural elements.The study found that communicative translation is feasible in guiding the Chinese to English translation of cultural texts.In translating reduplicated words,culture-loaded words and four-character words,translation techniques including literal translation plus annotation,transliteration plus annotation,corresponding translation and paraphrase are mostly used to compensate for the phenomenon of cultural deficiency and to better convey the information of the source text;in translating proverbs,ancient Chinese verse and prose,loan translation,omission,change of voices and change of sentence order are used to solve the translation difficulties caused by the structural differences between Chinese and English sentences and increase the readability of the translated text;in translating sentences in chronicle style and contrastive sentences at the textual level,reference,conjunction,ellipsis,logic copying and logic reshuffling are adopted to solve the problems caused by the differences between Chinese and English language features and to make the translation achieve coherence and cohesion.This report can provide some suggestions for the translation practice of the same type of text,and provide some reference for the study of communicative translation.
