| The source text of this translation practice report is selected from the chapters 1 to 22 of China in 70 Cultural Relics.The author of China in 70 Cultural Relics is Shanghai Museum.This book introduces 70 cultural relics to show readers profound historical and cultural charm,and it is a historical text.This book contains a lot of historical knowledge and Chinese culture,so there are some difficulties in translation.Text translation under the guidance of communicative translation theory(hereinafter referred to as "CTT")can effectively help target language readers fully understand the meaning and essence of the source text by paying attention to the feelings of target language readers.After understanding cultural relics’background and historical and cultural information,the translator chooses appropriate translation strategies,methods or techniques to translate the text,to make readers understand the meaning of the source text as much as possible,which will help to spread Chinese culture better and can also provide some help to foreign scholars and archaeologists researching Chinese history.Through reading and researching,the translator found that the text has the following language features from lexical,syntactic and textual levels:the source text contains a large number of proper nouns and culture-loaded words;the source text contains long and difficult sentences and ancient proses and poetries;the historical texts pay attention to the textual coherence and cohesion.According to the CTT,the translator can convey the historical and cultural information contained in the source text to the target language readers well.Under the guidance of CTT,at the lexical level,the translator should fully understand the meaning of proper nouns and culture-loaded words in the text first,then choose omission,annotation and so on to translate them;at the syntactic level,according to the structural differences between Chinese and English sentences,when translating long and difficult sentences and sentences with no subject,the translator should first analyze the logical relationships,then delete the redundant parts,adjust the word order and add subjects of these sentences.When translating ancient proses and poetries,the translator should make a double translation,and fully understand the meaning of the sentences first,then translate them into English in a concise way;at the textual level,the translator should read the context,understand the textual logic,and realize the coherence and cohesion of the text by changing the sentence structure flexibly and adding conjunctions according to the different expression habits of Chinese and English. |
