A Practice Report On C-E Translation Of Traveling Around China-Sichuan(Excerpts)

The unique natural and ecological beauty of Sichuan has nurtured the colorful cultural charm of the “Land of Abundance”,attracting people from all walks of life to come for sightseeing and tourism.Therefore,it is important to promote an English translation of the Sichuan tourist guide so that foreign tourists can better understand the local customs and cultural connotations.This translation practice involves Chapter 2-3of the book Travelling Around China — Sichuan into English.This report adopts communicative contextual adaption taken from Adaptation Theory,analyzing the source text from three levels: psychological world adaption,social world adaption,and physical world adaption,and finally arriving at an appropriate translation.At the psychological world adaption level,the translator applies information supplementary to better meet the psychological expectation of the target language readers in the translation of distinctive dish names;and for the translation of famous Chinese poetry,the translator adopts a rhetorical translation method to cater the aesthetic psychology of the readers.At the social world adaption level,for the translation of cultural-loaded words,the translator adopts the domestication thick translation method to make the translation easy to understand;for the translation of scenic spots descriptions,the translator uses a generalized expression method to simplify and clarify the content.At the physical world adaption level,for sentence translation with time indicators,the translator uses the method of addition and annotation to reproduce the historical background;for sentence translation with spatial indicators,the translator applies semantic equivalence to achieve contextual adaptation.The purpose of this translation practice is to thoroughly study the application value and communicative contextual adaptation in tourism texts in the context of Adaption Theory;to display the image of Sichuan culture and tourism to the world based on the cultural heritage of Sichuan;and to tell a good Chinese cultural story.Looking forward that the contents of this translation practice can provide valuable reference for future translators in this field.
