A Survey Report On The Website Translation Of Double First-class Agricultural And Forestry Universities

As globalization keeps growing in all domains,China’s higher education is also going global.University official website serves as an important window to present moral education,introduce latest scientific findings,show colorful campus culture,shape international image and attract foreign students.Therefore,the English version of university website is of great significance.In order to evaluate the English official websites of domestic “double first-class”universities,this report,through an online survey,collects and analyzes the characteristics and current problems in visual and linguistic translation of seven agriculture and forestry universities.Besides,this survey also refers to university webs of leading agriculture & forestry universities overseas according to 2021 QS World University Rankings,as well as high-quality bilingual webs at home for comparative analyses.According to the visual grammar purposed by Gunther Kress and recontextualization by Theo van Leeuwen,the survey found that from the visual perspective,the layout of web pages changes significantly,and that there is an increase in the total number of pictures used but still relatively low in the proportion and number of narrative pictures.The interactive meaning behind pictures is not attached with enough importance.As for the linguistic translation,among transediting strategies,deletion is often adopted in long texts,substitution and addition are usually seen when explanation is needed,and rearrangement normally occurs to cater for international readers.In a word,domestic agriculture and forestry universities still lag behind leading universities in the quality of English website.At last,several suggestions are put forward to improve translation on domestic university websites,which can provide a reference value to the globalization of China’s higher education.
