A Report On The Translation Of An Analysis Of Composition And Application Of Campus Plants In South China Agricultural University

This report aims to study how the author finishes her translation of An Analysis of Composition and Application of Campus Plants in South China Agricultural University in the course of preparing,translating and assessing under the theoretical guidance of Skopostheory put forward by Vermeer,a German functionalist scholar.First of all,in order to learn about the writer and the stylistic features of ST,she reads the ST for many times.In addition,she prepares necessary translation tools,including a variety of dictionaries,online translation softwares,and computer aided translation tools such as Trados.Thanks to these efforts,the author can establish a detailed termbase for later translation and research.Next,she reviews studies concerning the translation of forestry document so that she can acquire a better understanding of the ST.Then the author attempts to choose proper theoretical guidance for her further translation.The forestry documents are the carriers of forestry knowledge,whose translation has two main characteristics such as prominent functionality and intentionality.In addition,the main purpose of the forestry translation is to convey forestry knowledge and promote academic exchanges in forestry industry.The characteristics of forestry translation are consistent with the general rule of Skopostheory.Skopostheory has been developed and perfected continuously by many scholars since its foundation,so it has substantial content.In order to obtain more specific translation strategies,the Skopostheory put forward by Vermeer is chosen as the theoretical guidance for the translation of An Analysis of Composition and Application of Campus Plants in South China Agricultural University.The Shopostheory put forward by Vermeer has three main concepts,including Skopos,intratexual coherence and intertextual coherence,culture.Under the theoretical guidance,the author attempts to explore the effective methods and strategies for forestry translation at both micro and macro levels.The micro level involves three perspectives,including words,sentences and discourse while the macro level involves the potential readers.The report summarizes the whole process of translation systematically while demonstrating the findings and limitations of the research.Six main translation strategies are developed on the theoretical basis of Skopostheory,which are conducive the improvement of forestry translation quality.The translation strategies consist of selecting the precise meaning of the word and omitting the rebudant words;adjusting the internal order of the sentences and converting the part of speech;amplification and converting active voice into passive voice.However,the report also has some limitations.On the one hand,because of the author’s lack of knowledge about forestry,the quality of the target text has much to be improved.Although a number of data has been collected,due to the limitation of energy and time,the report just takes the most typical cases as examples and leaves other texts untouched.On the other hand,the report studies the translation strategies only within the framework of Skopostheory,so the research perspective has its limitations.Compared with the Skopostheory,the other theories which have its own advantages in providing guidance for forestry translation haven’t been discussed in the report.
