A Study On The Chinese Translation Of Culture-Loaded Words In Dead Souls

Gogol’s representative work Dead Souls is a masterpiece with profound ideological content and clear critical tendencies.It fully revealed the dark and corrupt social reality of imperial Russia and deeply analyzed the essence of Russian social life at that time.The article uses a lot of culturally loaded words that reflect the Russian national temperament.Culturally loaded words,also known as culturally unique words,are words in the language system that can best reveal the cultural information carried by the language,and demonstrate the social history and cultural life of a particular nation.In view of the differences in translators’ translation time,translation purposes and understanding of Russian culture,the translation examples are selected from Mr.Lu Xun’s translation in 1935,the joint translation of Man Tao and Xu Qingdao in1983,the translation of Mr.Zheng Hailing in 1996 and the 2004 translation A comparative analysis of Mr.Lou Ziliang’s translation.This paper focuses on analyzing the effect of the cultural information carried by the culturally loaded words in the novel Dead Souls in different Chinese translations.Firstly,the concept of culture-loaded words is defined,and the classification and translation rationale of culture-loaded words are summarized.Based on this,through a comprehensive analysis of relevant examples,the original text of Dead Souls and its four Chinese translations were compared,and the similarities and differences of different translators’translation methods and translation strategies for the cultural components of Dead Souls were explored.This paper analyzes the factors that influence the translator’s choice of translation strategies,and studies the problems of mistranslation in translation.Finally,the conclusion is drawn:when translating culture-loaded words with rich national cultural connotations,in order to maximize the advantages of the target language and reproduce the information of the source-language words,the translator should creatively choose different translation methods and strategies.
