The 18 th National Congress of the Communist Party of China opened the new era.Since then,the rapid development of China and the improvement of its influence in the world require that China must strengthen its cultural soft power,so that it can show its excellent culture and values to the world more confidently.Textbooks are the materialized carrier of curriculum.What’s more,textbooks are also the carrier of culture infiltration and value presentation.According to the English Curriculum Standards for Senior High Schools(2017 Edition),the importance of socialist core values for building morality and cultivating people is emphasized.It strives to cultivate socialist builders and successors with Chinese feelings and international perspective.It is significant to analyze the cultural contents and value orientation in textbooks for students’ cultural awareness and value cultivation.This paper based on the Humanistic Educational Theory,Curriculum Sociology Theory and Textbook Evaluation Theory,takes three compulsory and four optional compulsory FLTRP English textbooks(2019 Versions)in senior high school as research objects,and uses both statistic analysis and text analysis method to carry on the quantitative and qualitative research,mainly analyzes the cultural contents and value orientation of the textbooks through two research questions:(1)what are the characteristics of the distribution of Chinese and foreign culture in the textbooks?(2)What is the way of presenting the value orientation of cultural contents in the textbooks? Firstly,the cultural contents in the textbooks are classified according to Cortazzi and Jin’s and Niu Xinsheng’s cultural classification model,so as to discuss the proportion and the distribution characteristics of Chinese and foreign culture and different types of culture,and analyze which types of culture are highlighted or lacked in the textbooks.Next,according to the socialist core values of our country,the value orientation of the cultural contents in the textbooks is divided into three levels:national,social and individual,in order to discuss the way of presenting the value orientation of the cultural contents,and analyze which types of value orientation are highlighted or lacked in the textbooks.Finally,the data are counted by reading texts in detail,and presented visually in tables and charts,and the statistical results are analyzed.The study found that the proportion of Chinese and foreign culture is balanced,but the proportion of different types of culture is unbalanced in FLTRP English textbooks(2019 Versions)in senior high school.The value orientation is constructed systematically in both explicit way and implicit way,but the proportion is out of balance.Social culture accounts for the highest proportion in the textbooks,while behavioral culture and material culture account for less.In terms of value orientation,this set of textbooks emphasizes individual values and harmony,while it seldom touches on social values.Based on the above results,the author puts forward some feasible suggestions for textbook writers and teachers.Textbook writers should increase the proportion of behavioral culture and material culture,and reasonably allocate different types of culture;integrate contents in the textbooks and increase contrast culture;penetrate more value orientation of social level to students.In the teaching process,teachers should:(1)grasp the structure of textbooks as a whole and set up a holistic teaching concept;(2)understand the contents of textbooks deeply and carry out various teaching activities;(3)broaden learning channels and develop rich curriculum resources;(4)enhance cultural awareness and sense of responsibility and ability to convey values.
