A Report On The English-Chinese Translation Of CVS Health 2020 Social Responsibility Report From The Perspective Of Reiss’ Text Typology Theory

Corporate Social Responsibility(CSR)report is an important way for companies to disclose non-financial information.It not only helps companies to establish a reliable brand image,but also keeps stakeholders informed of corporate development and promotes the spread of CSR concepts.CSR reports originated in the West which has a longer history and richer experience in this field than China.In other words,there is much room for improvement of Chinese CSR reports.Therefore,it is of great practical significance to translate and learn from foreign advanced CSR reports.Based on Reiss’ text typology theory,the thesis studies the translation of CVS Health2020 CSR Report.The chief function of informative text is to convey information.The translation needs to be presented in a way familiar to readers,which requires the target language to dominate.However,English and Chinese have many differences in words,syntax and expressions,and different cultures inevitably influence translation.Consequently,it is crucial to know how to convert the two different languages in an accurate,integrated and fluent way.The thesis is divided into five chapters.Chapter One provides a general introduction to the translation project,research background and significance of the study.Chapter Two offers a literature review of the current study on text typology theory and(CSR)reports translation.Chapter Three deals with the theoretical basis – Reiss’ text typology theory and the informative text.Chapter Four discusses translation techniques in CVS Health CSR report translation,including literal translation,free translation,addition,division and translation shifts and so on.Finally,Chapter Five is the conclusion of the thesis.According to text typology theory,the author concludes that CVS Health 2020 CSR Report possesses the characteristics of informative text.At the lexical level,literal translation is frequently applied to proper nouns,while implicit terminology is hard to notice,it is necessary to search for professional meaning in translation.For culture-loaded words,compensation and free translation are employed to ensure the integrity of the information.At the syntactical level,translation techniques such as long sentences division,short sentences combination and translation shifts are used to deal with long and complex sentences.At the discourse level,conjunctions are added to achieve accuracy,integrity,and fluency of the translation.
