This report is based on a C-E mock simultaneous interpreting of the keynote speech at the webinar titled Domestic and International Situations during China’s14th Five-Year Plan Period. The speaker of the keynote speech,Fang Ning, shared his ideas and opinions on China’s new pattern for economic and social development. In this interpreting task, the interpreter confronted a few challenges caused by colloquialism, including loose syntactic structure, redundancies and implicit logic. With Gile’s Effort Model as the guidance, the interpreter adopted different strategies and tactics to solve the challenges.Faced with loose syntactic structure, the interpreter adopted restructuring and anticipation. To cope with redundancies, the interpreter employed omission and compression. And to address implicit logic, the interpreter resorted to addition of connectives and text expansion. After completing the task, the interpreter carried out an evaluation of her performance based on Bühler’s interpreting quality criteria and summarized her failures and deficiencies. Finally, the interpreter hopes that the report will not only be a useful guidance for her future practice, but also provide reference to interpreters in dealing with colloquialism.
