A Report On C-E Simultaneous Interpreting Under The Guidance Of Gile’s Effort Model

As globalization intensifies and exchanges between China and the rest of the world become more frequent,the demand for interpreters,especially simultaneous interpreters,has increased dramatically.SI(Simultaneous interpreting),as a major form of interpreting in which an interpreter continuously interprets the content to the audience without interrupting the speaker’s speech,is widely adopted in conferences interpreting.Since the COVID-19,some conferences have focused on online mode,resulting in a lack of communication between interpreters and speakers.Meeting time limits lead to higher delivery rate and a huge amount of information,all of which can cause a high or even over workload for simultaneous interpreters.This kind of high-load and challenging interpreting activity has high requirements in terms of listening,memory,information processing and language integration,i.e.interpreters need to coordinate their listening input and speech output abilities at the same time,and process a huge amount of information in a limited time.The result is that interpreters are very prone to uneven distribution of energy when faced with such a big challenge.Thus Daniel Gile,a famous French professor of interpreting,proposed the theory of Effort Model,aiming to achieve an appropriate distribution of energy for the successful implementation of simultaneous interpreting activities.This report will take the international dialogue conference on “Cyber Security:Governance and Trend” as a case study,apply Gile’s Effort Model as a guide,and combine the author’s interpreting recordings on the site to analyze the problems the author encountered in the process of Chinese-English conference interpreting,namely,limitation on short-term memory,misjudgments on listening,high amounts of information input,and complex structures of sentences,as well as the specific causes of the problems.By analyzing the problems and causes,the author proposes four corresponding interpreting strategies,namely,omission,anticipation,summarization,and paraphrasing,in a targeted manner.For novice interpreters who lack practical experience,it is crucial to learn to cope with similar situations in conference simultaneous interpreting,and this report,through the application and research of simultaneous interpreting strategies,can provide some guidance on the problems that arise in the process of simultaneous interpreting,and can provide reference for novice interpreters to improve the efficiency and quality.
