| This is a report on simulated E-C simultaneous interpreting practice of the Aid for Trade Stocktaking Event 2021: High Level Plenary Session. It describes challenges in this practice, and proposes coping tactics.Listening and analysis is the first and foremost step in interpreting, which directly affects memory and production. The interpreter finds that most problems in this practice including short-term memory and production are connected to listening and analysis which is indeed the main challenge in this task.According to Gile’s Effort Model of simultaneous interpreting and the comprehension equation, problems in interpreting consist of two types: linguistic problems and extralinguistic problems.Linguistic problems include unfamiliar words and expressions, complex sentences, and high information density, and coping tactics are parroting, transcoding, inference, segmentation and generalization.Extralinguistic problems include speaker factors, which are subdivided into strong accents,a high delivery rate and self-repairs of speakers, and insufficient encyclopedic knowledge, thus coping tactics are inference, omission, delaying the response and accumulating encyclopedic knowledge. After the task, the interpreter makes a post-interpreting assessment based on criteria proposed by Bühler. The report is to provide the interpreter guidance in interpreting study and practice, solve listening and analysis problems,as well as offer inspiration for researches on listening and analysis. |
