Simultaneous interpreting is a demanding multitask activity, which requires the interpreter to coordinate efforts in listening and analysis,short-term memory and target language production to carry out real-time interlingual conversion within a limited time.Daniel Gile’s Effort Model theory defines the types of effort consumed in each stage of simultaneous interpreting and the operational requirements in the process. However,in real working scenarios such as a multilateral international conference, multitasking often brings great pressure to the interpreter.Interfered by various factors, the interpreter often suffers from imbalanced effort distribution, which weighs on the quality of simultaneous interpreting. Therefore,it is worth considering how to optimize effort distribution through task preparation and the interpreting process given the specific working scenario and the features of the source language,in a bid to ultimately improve the output quality.Taking Daniel Gile’s Effort Model as its theoretical framework and the five English-Chinese simultaneous interpreting practices of the author at the 7th ASEAN Regional Forum Peacekeeping Experts’Meeting as its research object, the report first introduces in detail the task background, task preparation, interpreting process and quality assessment, then analyzes the difficulties and failures encountered in interpreting process and their relevance with effort distribution through case study, and finally proposes six coping tactics to improve effort distribution in listening and analysis,short-term memory and speech production, including task preparation, anticipation, syntactic linearity, visualization, omission, simplification and generalization to reduce the effort load in each stage and boost the output quality. In addition, based on the unique working environment and language features of the ASEAN Regional Forum Peacekeeping Experts’Meeting, the author summarizes the experience of simultaneous interpreting practice in the context of a multilateral international conference, intending to provide some reference for multinational conference and English-Chinese simultaneous interpreters and researchers.
