| This report is based on a simulated English-Chinese simultaneous interpreting of2018 Google I/O keynote.Google I/O,with the theme of“innovation in the open”,is an annual developer festival that allows participants to take a first look at Google’s latest technologies and developer products.Since entering the 21st century,developer conferences held by hi-tech giants have become increasingly prevalent,creating greater demands for interpreting services especially simultaneous interpreting.However,there is still a lack of qualified simultaneous interpreters.Against this backdrop,the 2018 Google I/O keynote is chosen as the material to write down this report in order to help simultaneous interpreters improve interpreting performance of technology conferences.The report begins by a detailed description of the simulated interpreting task.Then it briefly introduces Gile’s Effort Model and Comprehension Equation and categorizes problem triggers defined by Gile from the perspective of cognitive,linguistic and speaker-related factors.Based on these problem triggers and Gile’s Comprehension Equation and Effort Model,the author analyzes four problems:disfluency,information loss,misinterpretation and clumsy expression in her target delivery,and provides pragmatic tactics to help interpreters overcome listening,memory and production difficulties,coordinate among Efforts and improve interpreting performance.In the end,the author makes a brief summary of the report by pointing out that the bigger reason behind an interpreter’s bad performance is failure of effort coordination rather than poor language proficiency.Besides,the author also points out that this report may fail to cover some of the problem triggers that may occur in field practices as it is written on a simulated one. |
