The Eight Concert Etudes are piano works by the famous Russian composer Nikolai Kapustin. The set incorporates jazz elements in a classical structural framework, including ragtime,blues,boogie-woogie,swing,shuffle,and jazz harmony. At the same time,Kapustin presents the originally improvised jazz on the score, allowing the performer to perceive the jazz style as well as interpret the characteristics of jazz through accurate score information. This paper consists of four chapters, the first of which introduces the composer’s life and compositional style. The second chapter analyzes the jazz elements applied in this set, namely ragtime,blues,boogie-woogie,swing,sway rhythm and jazz special chords. The third chapter is divided into two sections,Section I:Jazz styles in the score. In this section, the interpretation about time values, accent marks, rests, and hold notes in jazz are explored;Section 2: The application of pedals in jazz, which contains rhythm pedals and harmony pedals.Through the exploration and performance analysis of jazz elements in this set,I hope that the information in the score will enable the performers to interpret the characteristics of jazz more accurately, and that it will be of some reference value to more performers.
