Nowadays, globalization has become a major trend in the development of human society.Driven by globalization, intercultural interactions have become increasingly frequent, making intercultural communication competence an essential quality for talents in the New Era.Given these facts, this translation practice report takes the second chapter of Principles of Intercultural Communication(2nd edition)written by Igor E.Klyukanov as the source text. The book discusses ten principles of intercultural communication, among which the selected chapter mainly elaborates the Uncertainty Principle.A study on the translation of this chapter, for one thing,is of guiding significance for scholars’ studies of intercultural communication;and for the other,it is significant for college students to understand, appreciate, and properly respond to the inherent uncertainties of intercultural communication. The report is also expected to provide guidance for college students to enhance their intercultural communication competence, thus achieve effective intercultural communication. This translation practice report consists of four parts. The first part is the description of the translation project, which briefly introduces the source of the translation material, the information related to the author and the book, and the significance of this study. The second part is an overview of the translation process that goes through the whole process in three stages, namely, preparation before translation, translation, and revision after translation. The third part is case analysis, which serves as the main part of this translation practice report.Under the guidance of Reiss’ Text Typology Theory,it selects typical translation cases from lexical, syntactic, and textual levels, and discusses the translation techniques in tackling those difficult issues occurred in the translation process.More specifically, the lexical level focuses on how to translate technical terms more accurately, and on such translation techniques as selection of semantic meaning and conversion of part of speech. At the syntactic level, translation techniques including sentence structural reorganization, voice conversion, and sequence translation are used to deal with appositives, passive sentences, negative sentences, and complex subordinate clauses. At the textual level, based on the related cohesion devices in the source text, the report demonstrates translation skills such as explication of pronouns, filling substitute parts, and conversion of conjunctions in addressing the issues of the cohesion and coherence in the target text.Following that, the last part gives a reflective summary of both findings and limitations of this translation practice, which would provide reference for the future translation of informative text.
