| With the rapid development of globalization,China is getting ever closer to the world’s center stage, and the interconnections with other countries are closer than ever before, which poses new requirements and challenges for the quality and efficiency of intercultural communication. In this context, the E-C translation of books on intercultural communication can help domestic readers understand the new principles of intercultural communication and cultivate intercultural communicative competence,so as to deepen international understanding and expand global exchanges and cooperation. The source material of this translation report is taken from Chapter Five of Principles of Intercultural Communication, which discussed the nature and implications of commensurability and its three forms and levels from the perspective of linguistic relativity, and analyzed the practical significance of the principle through a case study.According to Peter Newmark’s Theory of Text Typology, the source material belongs to the informative text. Therefore, the author adopts Newmark’s Theory of Communicative Translation as the guidance, and analyzes and discusses the difficulties in the process of translation at lexical, syntactic and discourse levels in this translation report. The lexical level focuses on semantic choice, semantic extension, and lexical conversion.Syntactically, for dealing with attributive clauses, parentheses, preparatory subject "it",and passive sentences, various translation techniques are adopted flexibly, such as adjusting word order, amplification and voice conversion. The discussion at the discourse level is centred on cohesion and coherence;the readability of the target language is further enhanced by changing cohesive devices,as well as the change in logical and stylistic coherence of the target language. The study found that Newmark’s theory is of great significance for the translation of the informative text, and that the theory is of great help in ensuring the target language achieve a better communicative effect. It ends with a discussion of a series of relevant translation approaches and techniques that are of great potential value to the future translation of the informative text. |
