A Report On The English-Chinese Translation Of The Applied AI And Natural Language Processing Workshop (Excerpt)

With the development of science and technology,artificial intelligence has been deeply penetrating into every aspect of our lives with more and more fruitful achievements.In order to make Chinese readers understand the development of AI in other countries,the translation of relevant texts has become an important task in the field of scientific exchanges and communication.For such a specific purpose,the author selected two chapters of the book “The Applied AI-Powered and Natural Language Processing Workshop:Explore Practical Ways to Transform Your Simple Projects into Powerful Intelligent Applications” written by Krishna Sankar from USA as translation materials for English-Chinese translation practice.And then,an analysis report was composed based on the practice.Because this book details the artificial intelligence and its application in natural language processing,which may exert certain influence on the development of more advanced artificial intelligence in our country in the future.This translation practice report first introduces the purposes and significance of the translation task,followed by a brief introduction description to the source text and target readers,then describes the translation process,including pre-translation,translation and quality assurance,and finally gives a case analysis of difficulties encountered in the translation process and corresponding countermeasures from the lexical,syntactical and textual levels by adopting Eugene A.Nida’s functional equivalence theory.At the lexical level,in order to accurately convey the information of technical terms,abbreviation words and amphibious words used in the source text,the author of this practice report makes use of such translation methods as literal translation and free translation.At the syntactical level,for the commonly used passive voice and nominalization structure in the English scientific text,the author of this practice report makes proper use of restructuring,conversion and other strategies so as to make the translation conform to the expressing habits of the target readers.At the textual level,the lexical cohesion,the grammatical cohesion and thematic progression used in the source text are reproduced in order to realize coherence and logic in the target text.In the process of translation practice and the writing of the translation report,the author of this practice report has a better understanding of the strategies and methods for translating the scientific texts and attaches great importance to the transference of information in the source text and the thinking habit and reading expectation of target readers by adopting appropriate translation strategies and methods according to the scientific text with its high conciseness and rigorous logic so as to ensure the quality of the translated version.It is hoped that this translation practice will help to popularize the relevant knowledge of AI,and this translation report will shed some light on the translation of scientific texts and cultivation of talents of relevant fields.
