The translator selected the first four chapters of Artificial Intelligence: modern magic or dangerous future as the source text of this translation report. The book was written by Yorick Wilks,a professor in the Department of Computer Science,University of Sheffield,UK,and his main research field is Artificial Intelligence. In the book,Yorick Wilks mainly discusses the origin of Artificial Intelligence, the controversies arising from Artificial Intelligence, and the prospects for the future development of Artificial Intelligence. As a scientific text, the book has a high expertized content,i.e.,Artificial Intelligence. In light of Eugene A.Nida’s Functional Equivalence Theory, the information of the original text is not translators’ only concern.Translators should also concentrate on the reader’s response so as to produce a smooth target text, which is highly accepted by the target receptors. Therefore, the translator believed Functional Equivalence Theory can act as a guiding theory in the translation task.By employing the translation strategy, domestication is held essential with foreignization as a supplement, the translator utilized annotation, literal translation, voice conversion, embedding, transformation, splitting, and other translation methods to address the problems encountered in three levels, that is,lexical level, syntactical level, and textual level,to put it concretely, technical terms, attributive clause, and cohesive devices, etc.By writing the report, the translator looked forward to furnishing some references and experience for researchers in scientific texts translation on AI subjects. |
