This is an English-Chinese translation practice report, which is excerpted from the latest novel We,the Survivors written by Malaysian Chinese writer Tash Aw,which mainly describes the scene of the protagonist’s escape after manslaughter and narrates his memories of his previous life.Through the insipid and restrained narration of the protagonist, readers can understand the hardships of people at the bottom of society and the arduous lives of immigrants. In the process of translation,to make target language readers have the same reading experience and response, the author chooses Eugene Nida’s Functional Equivalence Theory as the guiding theory and tries to achieve equivalence with the source text at all aspects. To make the translation equivalent to the original text at the lexical level, translation skills such as amplifying, deleting, converting are applied in translation, and Chinese four-character phrases are fully applied to avoid translationese. At the syntactic level, following the original order, inverting and dividing are adopted to avoid mechanical translation and realize the functional equivalence with the source text to the greatest extent. At the textual level, the cohesion is adjusted and the coherence of the original text is reproduced, which improves the readability of the translation. It is in line with the target readers’ reading habits.Under the guidance of the theory of functional equivalence, the translation achieves maximum equivalence with the source text, which helps readers to better understand and appreciate the source text.Through this translation practice, the translator realizes the interest and complexity of novel translation, and believes that towards literary translation, the translator should not only faithfully convey the meaning of the source text, but also reproduce the expression and appeal of the source text. Therefore, translators need to constantly improve their aesthetic ability and language expression ability.
