Over the years,English vocabulary teaching has been a difficult task for teachers to overcome.The degree and quantity of vocabulary mastery,as well as the proficiency of vocabulary application,affect students’ listening,speaking,reading and writing levels.Therefore,high-quality and efficient vocabulary teaching is imperative.General High School English Curriculum Standards(2017 Edition)clearly states the importance of cultivating students’ English key competencies.Vocabulary teaching is an important part of English teaching,so the English key competencies and vocabulary teaching are inseparable.Based on the English key competencies proposed in the General High School English Curriculum Standard(2017 Edition),this research investigated the teaching of English vocabulary in high school.Selected 265 students in the first grade of Tongliao Experimental Middle School to carry out questionnaires,and do interviews and classroom observations with four teachers,in order to discover and analyze the problems in English vocabulary teaching in senior high schools,and put forward proper strategies and suggestions.The research of this study raised two research questions:(1)What is the current situation of English vocabulary teaching in senior high school under English key competencies?(2)How to improve English vocabulary teaching in high school from the four dimensions of the English key competencies?The research results shows that there is a certain gap between the implementation of the English key competencies of English vocabulary teaching in Tongliao Experimental Middle School and the new curriculum standard.The main problems include insufficient cultivation of students’ language competence,cultural awareness,thinking quality and learning ability,and unsound teaching evaluation.Therefore,this study put forward suggestions for improving vocabulary teaching based on the education and teaching theory and related research results.
