English Curriculum Standard for Senior High Schools(2017)proposes that the specific goal of English curriculum for senior high school is to cultivate and develop students' English key competencies,such as language ability,cultural awareness,thinking quality and learning ability.As an important class type of English subject,reading class plays a very important role in cultivating students' English key competencies.As required by the new English curriculum standard,the major aim of senior high school English teaching practice and research should be to cultivate students' English key competencies.However,by sorting out the literature,the author finds that there are few studies on senior high school English reading teaching from the perspective of English key competencies in China.Hence,it is of great necessity and value to study the current situation of English reading teaching in senior high school from the perspective of English key competencies.Based on Humanistic Learning Theory,Concept of English Learning Activities and Effective Teaching Theory,the author adopts text analysis,classroom observation and interview to study the reading teaching of six senior high school English teachers in a middle school in Yantai City,and at the same time,the questionnaire about reading learning was distributed to 308 students of the six teachers.By analyzing the data collected by the four research instruments,this thesis chiefly discusses the following two research questions:(1)what is the current situation of senior high school English reading teaching in cultivating students' English key competencies?(2)What are the factors that influence the implementation of English key competencies in senior high school English reading teaching?As shown by the research results,the teachers have failed to understand English key competencies well enough,and the four elements of English key competencies have failed to achieve balanced effect in reading teaching.The specific cultivation characteristics of the four elements in senior high school English reading teaching are as follows.(1)The cultivation of language ability is the main direction.(2)The cultivation of cultural awareness mainly depends on the topic of the text in the textbook.(3)The cultivation of thinking quality mainly concentrates on the low-level thinking.(4)The cultivation of learning ability has not been paid enough attention.The factors influencing the implementation of English key competencies in senior high school English reading teaching are attributed to the following four aspects:(1)The examination-oriented education,which evaluates the teaching quality with the college enrollment rate,is the fundamental cause.(2)New textbooks are not put into use in time,thus the English curriculum content is not updated in time.(3)Teachers do not have a deep understanding of the new English curriculum standard.And teachers fail to organize English learning activities according to the Concept of English Learning Activities.(4)Students' learning style is mainly passive acceptance and lack of the consciousness of initiative inquiry.Based on the above findings,the author summaries the implications of the study,and then puts forward some suggestions for teachers and schools to improve the current senior high school English reading teaching.The suggestions are based on the feasible principle and aim at promoting students' overall and coordinated development of English key competencies.
