Abstract/Summary:
Picture books play a pivotal part in developing children’s cognition, language ability and creativity. This report develops from a translation project commissioned by C Press. The task for the translator is to translate and proofread children’s popular science picture books My First Book about Backyard Nature,My First Book about Our Amazing Earth and My First Book about Outer Space by Patricia J.Wynne and Donald M.Silver.The three illustrated books respectively explore scientific facts concerning backyard nature,Earth and outer space. And the project will strengthen the scientific thinking and interest of children with profound significance. In the translation practice,by applying Gideon Toury’s translation norms theory, the translator analyzed the translation difficulties from words, sentences and image-text combination. It is found that Toury’s translation norms are suitable for the translation of children’s popular science picture books.Specifically, the selection of technical words and the superimposed use of adjectives at the lexical level, the rendering of dialogues between the authors and the readers as well as long sentences at the syntactic level, and the explicitation and integration of pictures and texts at the image-text combination level can be carried out under the guidance of the initial norms and the operational norms. Finally, there are reflections and conclusions for applying specific translation methods and skills in this translation practice. The translator hopes that this report can provide a reference for other picture book translation projects in the future.
