A Report On The E-C Translation Of Children’s Popular Science Picture Books From The Perspective Of Transknowletology

With appealing illustrations and plain language,picture books serve as an important window for children to explore the world.As a category of children’s picture books,popular science picture books are intended to disseminate scientific knowledge and inspire children’s interest,curiosity and spirit of exploration.Currently,the quantity of translated children’s picture books introduced to the domestic market is increasing,but the quality varies and the related research lags behind to some extent.More attention should be paid to improving the translation quality of children’s picture books to meet the demands of children’s development.Transknowletology defines translation as a cultural phenomenon and social practice that involves the processing,reconstruction,and transmission of knowledge across languages,which is instructive to the translation of children’s popular science picture books in the new era.Based on the picture book translation project of the My First Book series commissioned by Changjiang Literary and Art Press Co.,Ltd,the report reviews and analyzes the implementation of the project from the aspects of pre-translation preparation,while-translation process and post-translation management.The report indicates that the translation of children’s popular science picture books should involve effective knowledge management and utilization,adhere to the principles of “seek truth from facts,establish righteousness through goodness,and beautify language through elegant expression”(simplified into “true meanings,full preparations and proper expressions” in this context)in Transknowletology and adopt reasonable translation methods and techniques to realize the knowledge transfer in picture books across different languages,cultures,and knowledge communities.For scientific knowledge,the translation of terminology and scientific facts should conform to the “true meanings” of knowledge,taking into account the readers’ level of comprehension.For linguistic signs,the translation of verbs should be accurate and lively.When translating long sentences,the“beauty” of target language can be achieved by dividing the sentences and adjusting the way of expression.For picture book style,translators should take multimodal style and interactive style into consideration,valuing the image-text relationship and reproducing the “dialogues” in books,to make the translated version conducive to the communication of knowledge and the inspiration of wisdom.Under the guidance of Transknowletology,this report systematically summarizes the experience of translating children’s popular science picture books in a real translation project,aiming to provide a reference for future translation practice in this field.
