"The phrase ’responding to objects and images’ comes from one of the ’Six Methods’ of Xie He in the Southern Qi.It is an extremely important part of the Six Methods. It represents the six methods of modelling, which is an indispensable part of our contemporary painting, and is also the foundation and starting point of the creative process of painting. From the viewpoint of Chinese painting,’responding to the shape of the object’ is a process in which the painter senses the object with his heart and expresses the form of the object with the intention of the brush and the image,in which the ’shape’ should be the trinity of form, likeness and mood of the object. The aim is to convey the divine charm of the objective object while expressing its shape, and finally to express the painter’s subjective intention. This paper explores the expression and importance of modeling in brush painting through the understanding and analysis of the theory of response to pictograms.Chapter two discusses the importance of the pictogram from the perspective of the development of contemporary brush painting, and chapter three explores the meaning and value of the pictogram in paintings through the connotation of the pictogram and the application of traditional Chinese modeling methods from the perspective of one’s own practice of sketching and creation.
