Xuwei was a most innovative painter in Late Ming Dynasty. He initiated a new era in Chinese free-style painting, improved Chinese ink-splashing painting in Birds&Flowers, pushed forward the transferring of Chinese traditional painting from configuration to free style.Xuwei, with brush in his hand, he fully expressed his individual mind, so boldly, fluently, and unconstrainedly. He perfectly presented his artistic skills as if he was not painting, but writing like Chinese Cursive Calligraphy. He broke the frame of regulations and freely expressed himself. His brush-strokes were so simple, vivid and macroscopical. In visual images, he insisted on "no seeking for realistic copying, but for artistic essence", which greatly influenced Chinese Birds&Flowers Paintings, contributed some important new concepts and artistic spirit. The rebellious and innovative spirit in Xuwei’s paintings deeply influenced and is still influencing generations by generations of Chinese painters after him.
