A Report On Remote Simultaneous Interpreting For China(Guangxi)-ASEAN Youth Volunteers Service Exchange

On September 24,2021,China(Guangxi)-ASEAN Youth Volunteers Service Exchange was held in Nanning,Guangxi.Leaders from China and ASEAN countries,volunteers from China and other countries discussed the topic “work hand-in-hand for rural education,walk shoulder to shoulder with volunteers”.Against the backdrop of Covid-19 pandemic,the exchange activity was held online and offline.The author was invited to offer simultaneous interpreting for this exchange activity.The interpreting practice provides this report with a profound corpus.This report consists of four chapters: task description,task process,case analysis and conclusion.In the chapter of task description,the author briefly introduces the background information of the task and summarizes three features of the interpreting task: remote interpreting,speakers’ strong accents,and relay interpreting.Task process involves interpreting preparation,interpreting process and post-task evaluation.The author introduces his preparation for background information,ASEAN accents and remote simultaneous interpreting.The process of designing interpreter performance questionnaire is also introduced.In the post-task evaluation section,the author,from an objective perspective,comprehensively evaluates his interpreting performance based on the analysis of collected questionnaire data and self-evaluation.The chapter of case analysis is the major part of this report.The author analyzes difficulties encountered during the task and divides them into two categories: difficulties caused by linguistic factors and difficulties caused by non-linguistic factors.In the report,linguistic factors include speakers’ accents,colloquial features,high density information.Non-linguistic factors include technical issues of internet and equipment,anxiety from live broadcast,relay interpreting,fast speaking rate.Guided by the Effort Model proposed by Gile,the author analyzes his interpreting performance and puts forward coping tactics such as generalization,omission and anticipation.In the chapter of conclusion,the author summarizes what he has learned from this interpreting task and suggests that he should continue to improve his language proficiency,get familiar with remote interpreting and pay attention to non-linguistic factors during interpreting.This report aims to improve the author’s future interpreting performance and offer guidance for other interpreters.
