In recent years,domestic automobile enterprises have been exploring foreign markets,and the pace of exporting automobiles has been accelerating.The demand for the translation of maintenance manuals has emerged at the moment.During the internship,the translator worked as a technology translator in a certain company and chose Driver Information System and The Maintenance of the Interior Trim Panel in X Brand EV Manual as translation materials.This material belongs to informative text with the purpose to allow users to quickly review and operate correctly.Guided by communicative translation theory with the reader-oriented,accuracy,and conciseness principles,the translator adopted specific methods to make the information in the manual more prominent and achieve the communicative function of the translation.The English translation of X Brand EV Manual can help overseas users solve after-sales maintenance and technical problems.This report consists of five chapters.The first chapter introduces the translation task and the structure of the report,laying out the overall background and outline.The second chapter mainly describes the activities of the three translation processes,including pre-translation,in-translation,and post-translation.The third chapter elaborates on the viewpoints and development of Newmark’s communicative translation theory,as well as its practical application in sci-tech translation.As the focus of this report,the fourth chapter is the case study,which mainly elaborates on the corresponding translation methods under the guidance of communicative translation theory and analyzes the guidance of the theory on the translation practice at three levels,including the lexical level,the syntactic level,and the textual level.The fifth chapter provides findings,limitations and corresponding improvement suggestions during the translation process.Through this translation practice,the translator found that communicative translation theory can guide the Chinese-English translation of X Brand EV Manual.Under the guidance of this theory,the translator applied translation methods such as paraphrase,borrowing translation,and change of voices to solve the difficulties in lexical ambiguity,lack of established translations for some terms,and Chinese-style logical relation between sentences.The primary purpose of translation is to convey the maintenance function while balancing professionalism and readability,achieving functional equivalence between the source and target language texts.Due to the translator’s limited expertise in automotive and the rough edges of this theory,the representativeness of this translation practice for the type of manual needs to be examined.
