A Report On The Translation Of The Flight Manual From The Perspective Of Text Typology Theory

With the continuous progress and development of science and technology,the sharing of advanced technology and knowledge plays a vital role in promoting the common progress of all countries.In developed countries,aviation flight technology has been greatly improved,and related research is relatively mature.In China,with the rapid development of the economy,there are higher and higher requirements for the civil aviation industry in the field of flight technology,and there is an urgent need for documents in related fields as reference materials in aviation flight operation technology.The introduction of documents of this type of overseas technology can promote the development of the domestic aviation flight industry.Therefore,the translation of civil aviation documents is directly related to the development of the industry,and the translation of such documents is also of important value.The PA-28-181 Archer flight manual is the internal teaching material for the training pilots of the Aero Guard Flight Training Center in the United States.The translator was commissioned by a domestic aviation pilot training center,selected the fourth and seventh chapters of the manual for translation,and wrote a practical report based on the translation of these two chapters.After reading previous studies on flight manual translation and analyzing the problems encountered in translation practice,the translator described and summarized the entire translation process and translation methods.Under the guidance of Newmark’s Text Type Theory,the translator analyzes that PA-28-181 Archer is an information text.The characteristics of this type of text mainly focus on the true and effective expression of the text content.The source text is the flight manual,with simplified vocabulary,long sentences and complex structure,strong professional knowledge,and more hidden information and logic.Based on the above text characteristics,the translator chose the communicative translation strategy.The translator pays attention to the accuracy and authenticity of the translated content.Under the guidance of translation strategies,the translator analyzes the actual problems encountered in translation from three perspectives: vocabulary,sentence,and paragraph.Focus on analyzing and summarizing the translation skills of terminology,long sentences,and logic of paragraphs,and strive to achieve standard terminology,accurate sentences,and clear logic,so as to enhance the accuracy,logic,and completeness of the translation in terms of expression.The results of the report show that under the guidance of Newmark’s Text Type Theory,translators can flexibly adopt a variety of translation methods to improve the quality of translations.At the vocabulary level,the translator mainly uses the translation methods of literal translation and free translation;at the sentence level,according to the language differences between Chinese and English,the translator converts the passive voice to the active voice and concludes that the long sentence translation should be split and combined appropriately;at the paragraph level,The translator pays attention to content coherence and logical clarity.In this way,the quality of the translation is concise and accurate.It is hoped that the difficulties and solutions summarized in the report can provide help for relevant translation practice and research.
