Bamboo is closely related to people’s daily life.With the rapid development of the exploitation and utilization of bamboo forest,more practical bamboo reference texts are urgently needed.Against this background,this project selects Bamboo: The Plant and It Uses(Excepts)as the translated text,and explores translation difficulties and corresponding methods from lexical,syntactic and textual levels under the guidance of Reiss’ s Text Typology Theory.According to Reiss’ s classification of text types,Bamboo: The Plant and It Uses,as a popular science text of plants,belongs to informative texts,whose function is to convey facts,data and information.Reiss points out that when translating informative texts,clear and concise language that conforms to targeted readers’ expression habits should be adopted to convey information accurately.This report divides the difficulties encountered in translation practice and corresponding translation methods into three levels.At the lexical level,internet resources and parallel texts are consulted and literal translation,conversion and other translation methods are adopted to ensure the accuracy of proper nouns and the readability of nominalization.At the syntactic level,English makes good use of long and passive sentences,while Chinese prefers short and active sentences.Therefore,omission,substitution and cutting are adopted to realize the smooth conversion from English to Chinese.At the textual level,English emphasizes hypotaxis,while Chinese emphasizes parataxis.Reiteration and ellipsis are applied to ensure the cohesion and coherence of the translated text,so as to remove reading obstacles for targeted readers.Under the guidance of Reiss’ s Text Typology Theory,this report discusses the feasible translation methods in popular science translation about plants from lexical,syntactic and textual levels according to the characteristics of informative texts,expecting to provide some reference for the popular science translation about plants in China. |
