A Report On The E-C Translation Practice Of Principles Of Neural Science(The Excerpt Of Chapter 4)

The original text of the translation task is the fourth chapter,“The Cells of the Nervous System”,from the book Principles of Neural Science(Fifth Edition)written by Eric R.Kandel,which was published by Mc Graw-Hill Companies in 2013.Chapter 4 mainly introduces neural cells,the transportation of protein particles,fast and slow axonal transport,and synthesis of proteins.It is an objective logical information text containing many professional words,non-finite verbs,passive voice,and complex sentences.Several translation strategies and skills are used to try to reflect original meanings and significance and to make translation professional and fluent at lexical,syntactic and textual levels.At the lexical level,what are analyzed are the complete equivalent translation of terms and the translating of normal words by analyzing the context and their professional background as well as other aspects.At the syntactic level,four kinds of components are analyzed.First,for punctuation marks,what is analyzed is converting English punctuation marks and parentheses into Chinese characters and punctuation marks respectively.Second,for attributives,what is analyzed is the translation of attributive clauses which contain logical relationship and a complex postpositive attributive.Third,for passive voice,what are analyzed are the methods that make translation in accordance with common usage of Chinese and the selection of passive words in translating.Fourth,for other syntactic components,what are analyzed are structural difficulties and solutions due to differences between English and Chinese.At the textual level,what are analyzed are the approaches that embody the original logic and coherence in translation.Through the translation practice,the translator has learnt knowledge about neural science,understood translating strategies more deeply,and accumulated experience of translating scientific and technological texts.It is hoped that the report is helpful to provide references and experience for translating texts in similar fields.
